Writing this pocket guide was a triple challenge: first, to shift the focus from sea and sand tourism; second, to give insight into local culture and history; finally, to design written itineraries and grow listings and features around them. As author. This was my second pocket guide. The idea this time was to encapsulate Madrid’s rich cultural sights (hi and lo), as seen from the insider’s point of view. The walks encouragec visitors to explore the city’s barrios, or local quarters. I was lucky to work with editor Dorothy Stannard again and with Bill Wassmann, an amazing photographer.
